With the SWL-1, you can send an SOS directly from the unit or use the Somewear app on your iPhone or Android to send/receive messages via satellite including weather forecasts. Requires additional purchase of subscription through Somewear. I rarely use it and it’s been a nice comfort to have along on trips. It has pulled satellite signals even indoor near windows for me. I have had it for a few years and only power it on to test and update firmware which is easy through their app. I no longer have the original box, packaging or manuals. Somewear labs support has been very helpful in quickly getting me up to speed.
