Why is a low temperature charge cut-off feature important? Charging a frozen lithium battery will damage the cells. This battery can still be used in temperatures of - 4F to 130F and will have more discharge energy than a lead acid battery at those temperatures. This BMS low temperature protection prevents charging and damage to the cells until the battery warms up. Why is a BMS important? AMPS batteries use a high quality BMS? Battery Management System. The BMS protects the batteries and cells from failure. This includes low temperature charge protection, low voltage protection, high voltage protection, high current discharge protection, charge voltage cut-off protection, BMS high temperature protection, cell balancing and short circuit protection. The AMPS BMS also allows for connecting in series (to increase voltage) or in parallel (to increase amp hour capacity). Beware of batteries that cannot connect in series or parallel. Why is the Warranty important? AMPS offers a 12 Year Warranty - what that means is the battery and BMS to be free of defects in material or workmanship for the life of the battery. Depending on usage, these batteries can last up to 20 years. Beware of companies that offer short-term warranties. There are a lot of low quality BMS and second grade cells available. Second grade batteries often have been used in medical or industrial applications and repurposed. They may have used 50% of the cycle life but will still maintain good voltage and capacity (the beauty of lithium batteries). However, they will not last, hence the short-term warranty. There are 3 basic types of LFP cells - prismatic, cylindrical and pouch. Prismatic are large block shaped cells. They are more energy dense (more Ah), so fewer are used and are generally bolted together. Prismatic cells are the best choice for deep cycle batteries because of the simplicity and energy density. Cylindrical are smaller (like a D cell) and a large number are cobbled and welded together to create a battery. Lots of little batteries welded together means more potential failure points but a failed cell is less noticeable. Pouch cells are what you have in your cell phone. Like Cylindrical cells, there are numerous pouch cells which are stacked together. They are best for low charge and discharge applications. Why are copper terminals important? AMPS uses copper alloy terminals. Most other batteries use bronze, brass, stainless steel or lead terminals. The differences in electrical conductivity of various materials used in electrical products are often not well understood. Making assumptions about the electrical conductivity of a material can lead to disastrous results. The lower the conductivity, the higher the resistance. Heat is the result of high resistance and higher amps. If the resistance and the amps are high enough – things can melt and catch fire. Perhaps the most common form of this error is the use of stainless steel, brass or bronze for copper in electrical applications. Brass is only 28% as conductive as copper. Nickel is 22%. AMPS uses Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) also called Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LFP) chemistry in the batteries. If it is not Lithium Iron Phosphate / LiFePO4 / LFP, then you likely getting a more dangerous chemistry with less cycle life. Chemistries such as NMC, LCO, LMO, NCA are all lithium chemistries but have the potential to explode and catch fire. It is these chemistries which you hear about in the news. Lithium Titanate (Li2TiO3) - LTO and Lithium Iron Phosphate are the safest lithium chemistries. LFP and LTO cells are not subject to thermal runaway explosion and fire like other chemistries. LFP is significantly less expensive than LTO. LFP cells are the brawn and the BMS is the brain of the battery providing long life, consistent voltage and safety. Major auto manufacturers, such as Tesla have changed from other more dangerous chemistries to LFP for just these reasons. A 100% discharge of an AGM/lead acid battery can cause permanent damage to the battery. The Lifeline might last 4-5 years if constantly used and properly maintained. AMPS lithium batteries will last 3 to 5 times longer than most AGM batteries. The less expensive, lower quality batteries available can have an even lower cycle life, as little as 300 cycles. Constant current is the incoming amps. A fully discharged AMPS 200Ah lithium battery can be fully charged at the recommended 100 amps in around 2 hours! A new AGM / lead acid batteries has a charge efficiency of 85% and 15% of the incoming charging amps are lost to the chemical conversion and hydrogen gas production. AGM / lead acid batteries have an initial high amp bulk charge for the first 80% of battery Ah capacity and then throttles down the absorption stage amp input for the last 20% of the battery Ah capacity. As the battery ages, the charge efficiency decreases. This means that the battery will take a very long time to fully charge when compared to AMPS lithium battery. Sometimes solar is just not enough to charge the batteries and you must rely on some kind of generated power. If you run the engine or a generator, then the lithium battery bank will charge up much faster meaning you do not have to run it so long. By having less run time, you save on fuel and maintenance. You don’t need to change oil and filters as often. This is money in your pocket. IMPORTANT!! When charging a lithium battery directly off the alternator, an Alternator Protection Device, such as the Sterling Power APD12 should be installed unless an external regulator such as a Balmar or Wakespeed is present. The reason is that lithium batteries take maximum amps from the alternator until fully charged and then cuts off incoming charge. This will create a momentary back spike voltage which can damage an alternator internal regulator. Alternatively, if an AGM/lead acid battery is used as a start battery, then using a DC to DC charger is recommended. What is peace of mind worth? Before you buy a lithium battery - check the specs. Not all lithium batteries are the same!! Check the chemistry type. If it is not Lithium Iron Phosphate LiFePO4 / LFP, then you likely getting a more dangerous chemistry with less cycle life. Some use pouch cells (like those in a cell phone) or a bunch of little ‘D-type” cells welded together. This can limit the battery ability to connect in series or parallel. Also, the more cells and connections provide for more potential failure points due to vibration and movement. AMPS use the larger prismatic cells and bolted solid copper connections. Some offers are battery cells only - you need a quality BMS (battery management system) to protect the cells from excessive charge/discharge which will damage them. Cheap BMS in cheap batteries do not last. The BMS determines the charge/discharge capacity of a battery. A lithium battery listed with a 100A BMS does not tell the whole story. A 100A BMS generally means a continuous discharge of 100A. Or it could mean a discharge peak of 100A. It is important to also know the BMS discharge and charge capacity. You need to know these specs. Lead acid batteries are nominal 12 volts and at a 50% discharge are around 12-12.2 volts. AMPS Lithium batteries have 12.8 nominal volts and maintain a discharge voltage of over 12.8 volts throughout the majority of the discharge cycle. The BMS (battery management system) limits the charge and discharge abilities of the battery. The continuous charge or discharge amperage rate indicates the BMS capacity. Lithium iron phosphate batteries are a popular way to power recreational and commercial boats, RVs, solar energy systems and other applications that require reliable, long lasting, quick charging and safe batteries. Although it costs a little more upfront, lithium provides superior longevity, efficiency and safety benefits compared to traditional, lead acid batteries. Deep cycle lithium batteries should not be used to start engines. There are lithium start batteries available. All batteries have a lifetime holding capacity for a finite amount of energy. Lithium batteries just happen to be 5 to 10 times that of lead acid batteries. In many cases, this could be the last battery you ever buy. A single AMPS 200Ah lithium battery can be discharged up to 100%. If the lithium battery was discharged 50% every day for 365 days for 20 years, that is a total 7400 days = 3500 cycles. Lithium batteries can cycles depend on Depth of Discharge (DOD). Lithium batteries last longest if kept charged 40-80% and this discourages dendrite formation. A LFP lithium battery end of life is considered when the battery holds less than 80% of the original charge. So, a 200Ah battery will still have 160Ah at the “end of life”. It is still a perfectly good battery and can be still used, it will just discharge sooner because of the lower Ah. It will still have more usable amp hours than a new LIFELINE GPL-4DL AGM battery. AMPS lithium battery can be discharged 100% without damage. However, this will reduce cycle life. With thousands of cycle life, that usually is not a concern. If a lithium battery is maintained between 40 to 80%, it theoretically last indefinitely. Dendrite formation in lithium cells is much like lead sulfate crystals in lead acid / AGM batteries. Dendrites can form when the lithium battery sits unused at over an 80% charge. Lithium batteries are happiest when they are used.
