Use thicker wire for higher powered installs and long runs. Remember the larger the number (gauge) is the thinnest or smaller size wires. 22 gauge is smaller than 20, 20 is smaller than 18, etc. Here's a good general rule when buying wire: 24, 22, 18 gauge is on the thinner side and for the lowest power applications. 16 & 14 gauge is a little thicker and for low to medium power applications. 12 & 10 gauge is even thicker and for medium to higher powered applications. 8 & 4 gauge is much thicker for higher powered 12V DC power applications. 2 gauge and larger is very thick for the highest powered 12V DC power applications.
